LEADING CHOIR TO VISIT BURNLEY

Thursday 28 October 2010

Pre Concert press release has been sent to the Burnley Express; Burnley Citizen & the Lancashire Telegraph.
A leading Welsh Male Voice Choir is to visit Burnley on Thursday, 28th October 2010. The Mechanics Theatre at Burnley will be the venue for the first visit of Bridgend Male Choir, as part of its tour of the North West. It will be the first performance ever of a Welsh male voice choir at the venue.

Celebrating its 50th Birthday this year, the Choir is delighted to have the opportunity to perform at this fine theatre, bringing with it some of the history and culture of Wales. Appearing with the 65 touring choristers of the Bridgend Male Choir will be soprano, Llio Evans and concert pianist, Richard Lennox, both helping to add to the variety of what is likely to be a wonderful evening's entertainment.

The Choir's Golden Celebrations have this year included recognition in the form of a Citizenship Award from its Borough Mayor for it having assisted in the raising in excess of £1 million for charity and as ambassadors for the town and Wales. The Bridgend Male Choir has had the opportunity to sing during its special birthday year at Cathedrals in Cardiff, Bristol and Liverpool, as well as venues on the south coast at Lyme Regis and the Riviera International Centre, Torquay. The highlights of its performances in its native Wales in 2010 include its entry into the Welsh National Eisteddfod, which it has won twice in recent years; two memorable concerts at its local premier venue, the Grand Pavilion Theatre, Porthcawl, one with leading opera star, bass baritone, Sir Willard White and the other with the iconic and very popular Welsh entertainer, Max Boyce, as well as most of the venues in its locality, at which it has performed throughout its history. On Friday, 29th October, the Choir will entertain at St Hildeburg's Church at Hoylake, Wirral demonstrating its versatility and its next post tour engagement is at the historic Tabernacle Chapel, Pontycymer. At this Garw Valley venue, the Choir will re-enact its inaugural Concert of 50 years ago, as close a resemblance to the original as possible, but this time being compeered by local boy, Choir Patron and BBC Newsreader & Journalist, Huw Edwards. With much else still to come in 2010, choristers will look back on this year as very special.

The Choir is led on this short tour by Musical Director, John Jenkins, who together with Accompanist, Laura Smith has forged this group of men into a Choir with the ability to sing all kinds of music from the traditional to the spiritual and the challenging to balads and West End show tunes. A sample of all will be included at the Mechanics Theatre. The Choir will also perform two items with soloist, Llio Evans, “O Virgin of the Angel Host” and “Home Again”, the latter being the Premièred performance of the words and music of Roy Davies, arranged for the Choir by John Jenkins. This beautiful song includes poignant lyrics associated with servicemen returning from current conflicts overseas. Llio will also entertain with a selection of popular items and is guaranteed to please. Another great favourite is concert pianist, Richard Lennox, who has graced the very best stages and previously performed with the Choir at Weston-Super-Mare last year. Richard's ability with the piano keys received much praise and Bridgend Male Choir is delighted to appear with him again.

Tickets for the Concert are available from the Box Office at the Mechanics Theatre. Tel. 01282 664400. The evening promises to be one of great variety and entertainment. Don't miss it - hope to see you there!
