REVIEW – BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR AT WELLS CATHEDRAL

Saturday 21 February 2015

Having helped the charity Prostate Cymru to raise in excess of £1,000 last week at Cefn Cribwr, the figure was topped this week when the choristers helped raise an even greater sum, this time for a county of Somerset’ charity, St. Margaret’s Hospice, at the Twelfth Century, magnificent Wells Cathedral.
This time the Choir was entertaining hundreds of listeners in the Nave of the Cathedral which had an acoustic which was quite fantastic. The haunting sound and reverberations made for an experience which Musical Director, Rhiannon Williams-Hale described as pleasing as she had ever heard. Certainly, under her assured conducting the choristers were confident and controlled whether softly singing Bring Him Home; Llef and Myfanwy or the resounding choruses of Men of Harlech and American Trilogy or the rich and fulsome Amens of Llanfair and Tydi a Roddaist. The piano & organ accompaniment of Stephanie Bailey and Scott Williams respectively added significantly to the production to leave the appreciative congregation well pleased.

In between the Bridgend Male Choir’s renditions, came three vocal soloists, all sopranos and from the locality. Joanne Baker, Gabrielle Govier & Eden Simpson, who together with Scott on organ added to a great experience. Feedback from the concert sponsor, Haydn Davies; senior Cathedral staff and members of the congregation supported the whole atmosphere of well-being. Choristers commented on privilege and delight at the experience, before making the journey home.

Bridgend Male Choir can next be seen in the locality on Saturday, 7th March at 7.00 pm, the venue this time, Brynteg Comprehensive Lower School (Heolgam entrance). This time they will be supporting local charity, St. John’s Trust and joined by Ladies choir, Vocelle and the Choir of Oldcastle School. Tickets £5 are available at Felicity’s Jewellers, Nolton Street or at the entrance before the concert start. There will be a Licensed Bar and plenty of free parking.
