On the day, the talents of the Bridgend Male Choir were not quite enough to get into the prize money positions at Llangollen’s International Eisteddfod.
However, it did finish in a creditable fourth place. Eight choirs were selected to compete on the day from twenty five entrants.
The international panel of judges praised the Bridgend Choir’s set piece performance commenting on a wonderful beginning, good discipline throughout with dynamics well observed. Overall, they commented on good authority from this fine Choir. Musical Director, John Jenkins thanked each of the 78 choristers individually for their fine efforts.
Many friends were made at the Maes and later in the Town as the Choir went through its post concert pieces, encouraging many singers from several countries to join them in making the most of a glorious occasion. There is no doubt that friendships have now been established with a number of choirs, which will be pursued over the coming weeks.
The Male Voice Choir competition was won by Cor Godre’r Aran from Llanuwllyn, North Wales (also winners in 2000); in second place was the Diocesan Boys School Choir, Kowloon and in third, Linkoping University Male Voice Choir from Sweden – all the choristers from Bridgend congratulate them on a very fine achievement. Bridgend, of course, finished in fourth place followed by the National Male Choir of New Zealand; Cor Brythoniad from Blaenau Ffestiniog; Warrington Male Voice Choir (which has achieved a second and third place within the past five years) and finally, Dore Male Voice Choir from Sheffield.
The Bridgend Male Choir can now take their competition sharpness into the many concerts planned for the remainder of this year, the next being at the OCLP Club, Bryntirion, Bridgend on Monday, 1st August 2005 commencing at 7pm. On this date the Choir hosts the Orange County Community Choir of Florida on what promises to be a very entertaining occasion if previous choir visits from the USA are anything to go by. Tickets are available from Secretary, Jim Thomas on 01656 654090 or at the door.
The Choir is appreciative of the support of the OCLP Club members, committee and stewards for their ongoing support of the development of a constantly improving musical culture in the Bridgend area.
