Owen Davies was a very sound Bottom Bass and loved the choir which he joined in 2012. He was a true gentleman, a great storyteller who loved a laugh and was admired and respected by everyone who knew him. He was also an accomplished and competitive golfer, a Welsh speaker and supporter of all things Welsh. He is sorely missed by all his fellow choristers and friends at Bridgend Male Choir.
The bench was purchased and engraved in honour and thanks for Owen’s friendship and organisational capacity by Southerndown Golf Club Winter League members over the last 20 years.
Owen ran the annual winter league competition for some 30 or more Southerndown members. This was always a keenly contested competition, culminating in two winners, one for the first division and one for the second division. These were then hosted to a night out on the town or as they grew older, a possibly more sensible an “away day”, with or without golf.
Owen also organised away days every year on the weekend of the prestigious Duncan Putter Cup being held at Southerndown, when the course was closed to members.
Every year, between Christmas and New Year, Owen would organise a team competition between the Southerndown members previously belonging to either Bridgend Squash Club or Bridgend Sports Rugby Club, though he himself had never been a member of either. This was always one of the highlights of his year, a fun and competitive day out as well as a welcome relief from family duties over the festive period.
Owen played once or twice a week, come rain or shine for over 25 years at Southerndown. It was a great part of his life. He is remembered with great fondness at the club and particularly his winter league friends. It was fitting therefore, that his wake was held at Southerndown Golf Club on a gloriously sunny day on August 6th 2018.
Some photos of Owen wife, Kath, and family, sons Gruff and Hywel, grandchildren Elen, Bevan, Nia, Amélie, and Owain sitting proudly on the memorial bench.
