Independent Concert review from concert-goer, Sally Wayman, Musician, Boverton
Bridgend Male Choir presented another enjoyable evening of music in St Illtud’s Church Llantwit Major on Friday 7th September.
The choir was conducted by John Jenkins who has trained the choir to perform to a very high standard. One cannot but be impressed by a choir who sings for a couple of hours without a piece of music in sight. The programme was a varied one with many traditional favourites as well as a sprinkling of new and more modern arrangements.
The new piece for the evening was an arrangement of “Yesterday” which was rich with changing harmonies. We were treated to several members of the choir stepping out to perform solos. They were Paul Carter, David Hillman, and Gethin Williams and their songs were interesting and varied. Thomas Jones deserves a special mention for singing an interesting and taxing number using a tune from Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March!
The audience were also treated to a moving poem by Peter Davies, a member of the choir, with promises that this will be set to music one day! Something to look forward to. Gareth Davies compered the evening and the two excellent pianists were Rhiannon Williams-Hale and Laura Smith.
This was yet another evening where the choir help to raise money for good causes, this time the concert was arranged by The Royal British Legion.
