INDEPENDENT ANNUAL CONCERT REVIEW

Sunday 11 September 2016

I attended an excellent concert on Friday evening at Tabernacl Church Bridgend given by the 70 members of Bridgend Male Choir. I have written an article for your consideration for the press (sent to the press, signed - Stewart Roberts, Musical Director, Pendyrus Male Choir):

The Bridgend Male Choir has outgrown its origins in 1960 as a Police Choir to become one of Wales' leading  choral organisations, with a notable record of  competitive success and appearances at large scale charity and entertainment events.

Their Gala Concert on Friday evening at Capel yTabernacl, Bridgend, was their first 'annual' under newly-appointed MD, Ryan Wood. An accomplished musician who has already worked with renowned choirs like Pendyrus and Treorchy, Ryan can feel well pleased with himself at the performance of his 70  choristers when a packed audience showed its warm appreciation of a varied programme that extended from arrangements of traditional  Welsh airs and hymns to Gounod and Verdi.

He was ably supported by accompanist Stephanie Bailey, organist Scott Williams who delivered a robust performance of Widor's famous Toccata, and soprano soloist Angharad Morgan who established a warm rapport with the audience with delightful performances of Lehar, Ivor Novello and Meirion Williams' ravishing 'Pan Ddaw'r Nos.' A notable item from the choir itself was the closing item of the first half - Eric Jones' arrangement of Christus Salvator, performed with accuracy and a rich, warm tone. The second half saw the audience tapping its feet to items such as "Ride The Chariot" and "I Could Have Danced All Night" and a deserving standing ovation followed the finale - a stirring rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone". This final item bringing together choir, soloist, organist and accompanist for a fitting end to a entertaining evening which was skilfully compèred by choir chairman, Gareth Davies.

There is no doubt that with new musical director, Ryan Wood at the helm, the future is bright for this choral organisation. Bravo to all!
