LOCAL CHOIR LINK WITH MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

Sunday 14 September 2014

The Russell Sheppard Trust came to the attention of Bridgend Male Choir years ago, being introduced by its late Musical Director, the popular John Jenkins

A Bridgend resident for part of his life, John lived at Merthyrmawr Road in the town with his musician wife, Wendy and family. Wendy is the daughter of Russell Sheppard who did so much for music through the education system in south Wales. A Vice President of Bridgend Male Choir in her own right, Wendy together with her daughter Karin has continued the link through the Choir with the Trust.

Every other year, vocalists and instrumentalists compete for the Trust award and scholarship. As well as the bursary, vocal winners are invited to perform at the Choir’s Annual Concert, to the local choristers delight. Pembrokeshire’s Jennifer Robinson, the 2014 Winner will sing at the “Annual” this year. The quality of the competition is such that these vocalists usually go on to bigger and better things.
