Bridgend Male Choir returns from a successful Tour
Following on from recent concert successes at home Bridgend Male Choir embarked on its annual tour to the Balearic Island of Majorca and with three performances over three days certainly enhanced its reputation.
The Concerts were in support of charity fund-raising through the Anglican Church, Calvia Lions and Rotary International. Prior to the concert at the Cap Vermall Cultural Centre, Cala Ratjada on Wednesday, the Choir attended a welcoming reception with the Mayor and were entertained by the local choir and a display of typical Mallorquien dancing. Thursday saw the Choir entertain guests and local groups at their hotel, Hotel Zafiro Rey Don Jaime, Santa Ponsa. The highlight of the Tour was most certainly the final concert in the wonderful surroundings of the Gothic Roman Catholic, Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma where an audience of well over 1000 were entertained to a varied programme which included The Prayer from ’Lohengrin’ by Wagner, Christus Salvator by Gounod, along with great Welsh hymns, Builth and Cwm Rhondda.
Here, the audience saw an outstanding display by soloist, Scott Williams, who entertained with solo pieces on the Cathedral’s magnificent baroque organ demonstrating his ability to master the most complex of instruments. Musical Director, Ryan Wood demonstrated his control skills to get the best from his charges throughout and was ably supported by the exceptionally talented Stephanie Bailey on piano. At Cala Ratjada, Ryan and Stephanie exhibited their talents further with the piano duet 'Berceuse' from the ‘The Dolly Suite’ by Faure.
It was not all “work”, with ample time to sample the delights of the Island with excursions to Capdepera, Palma & Bellver Castle, arranged throughout the principality by Calvia Tourist Board and the Charity Committee.
The Choir's next local performance is on the 24th November, at Our Lady & St Patrick's RC Church in Maesteg. The Choir along with guest soprano Angharad Morgan will be performing in support of Church Funds.
