"SHOWTIME" BRINGS EVEN MORE APPEAL TO ANNUAL CONCERT

Friday 28 September 2007

Independent Review from Alan Beckwith, Sigginstone

The capacity audience at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Bridgend, was treated to a superb evening of musical entertainment on the occasion of Bridgend Male Choir’s 47th Annual Concert on Friday 28th September.

The selection of music allowed the choir to demonstrate its comprehensive ability to perform items ranging from traditional music from Wales through to "Showtime" music including songs from Miss Saigon and West Side Story.   Regular visitors to the Choir concerts have experienced the professionalism of the choir and of John Jenkins, whose infectious energy and enthusiasm bring out the wonderful sounds from this great choir. Last night was no exception.

The audience were also treated to performances by two outstanding soloists, being Gwawr Edwards from Llanon, Ceredigion, who first sang with the choir in March 2006 and Craig Yates, who currently works with the Welsh National Opera. Gwawr included Jerusalem and Ivor Novello’s My Dearest Dear in her solos, and Craig included Stars (Les Miserables) and Mr Cellophane (Chicago) in his presentation. Both were given standing ovations by the appreciative audience.

The whole spectacle was completed by the excellent accompaniment of Rhiannon Williams-Hale, Cheryl Jones and Laura Smith. Their skills on piano, organ and percussion matched that of the other performers to provide a truly memorable evening!
