ST DAVID'S FESTIVAL GALA CONCERT

Sunday 02 March 2008

Preview from Public Relations Officer, David Burt

Several years ago, a chance meeting between Cancer Research Wales’ Fundraising Director, Maggie Hughes and Gareth Davies, Librarian & Compere at Bridgend Male Choir, former childhood friends from Brynmenyn, led to the staging of a hugely successful concert for the Charity at the magnificent Llandaff Cathedral. Such was the success, they decided to make the Concert an annual event and it has since gone from strength to strength.

This year’s Concert takes place at St David’s Hall, Cardiff on Sunday, 2nd March at 7 pm and is headlined by Welsh singing star and broadcaster, Shan Cothi, known to many from her larger than life role as choir musical director in the highly amusing Con Passionate television series. Shan has briefly worked with Bridgend Male Choir in the recent past at the Welsh National Eisteddfod, Swansea. After the boys from Bridgend had successfully won the Fusiliers Cup, they proceeded to sing at the Cancer Research Wales stall on the Maes & were delighted when Shan took the baton, showing the skills normally associated with the Choir’s own eminent musical director, John Jenkins. On this occasion, Shan will be without the baton, rather regaling the audience with her own song selection and joining with the Choir and Band.

Also appearing at this expected musical extravaganza will be the exciting young baritone, Craig Yates. Craig is no stranger to working with the Choir having performed with it on several past occasions both in Wales and England. Together with the other artists, Craig will be singing songs appropriate for the occasion, as well as popular songs from the stage. The Concert would not be complete without the huge contribution of the Bedwas, Trethomas & Machen Brass Band. This award winning Band is better known as the BTM Band and has been successful both on stage and in competition. A real treat is in store.

The Concert will be compered by the Bridgend born well known newsreader, broadcaster and raconteur, Huw Edwards. Huw is a great supporter of this worthy Charity which he supports whenever opportunities permit.

Last year’s Concert at the same venue produced a full house and hopefully this will again be the case this year. The Concert date is Mothering Sunday and is the perfect opportunity for Mums to be dined and entertained to make it a special day to remember. Tickets for the Concert are available at a cost of £15, £12 & £10 from the Box Office on 029 2087 8444. A 2 Course Mothers Day lunch at the same venue is £15, with advance booking strongly recommended.
