Successful visit to Greater London

Saturday 04 October 2008

The Choir's second visit to Leatherhead matched the success of the first. David Burt writes...

The Choir has returned from a successful Concert in Greater London, when it had the opportunity to perform at St Mary & St Nicholas Church, Leatherhead at the weekend. Led by Musical Director, John Jenkins, choristers were accompanied by Laura Smith on piano and Scott Williams playing the organ. As part of a team of accompanists, Laura’s opportunities have recently increased and she took the opportunity to display her considerable talent, receiving much praise from participants and audience alike. Bridgend boy Scott, son of proud chorister, Dennis, was making his debut with the Choir.

Following a fire some years ago when the Church organ was damaged beyond repair, it was decided to remove it completely. The resultant works revealed part of an earlier organ originally commissioned in 1776 which had been buried behind. At a cost of £250,000 and with the aid of a significant Heritage Grant the older organ was restored. Guest organist, Scott Williams, took his chance to show what the organ could do, as well as playing a more modern counterpart. His contribution drew much applause and there is little doubt that he will be welcomed to appear again with the Choir soon.

Soloists for the evening were Leon Evans, Graham Collins and Gethin Williams, all of whom were much appreciated by a packed Church congregation. Choristers have twice visited this venue where the warmth of the reception was matched by the wonderful catering and afterglow which followed as part of the Harvest Festival Supper.
